The Atlanta Marriott Marquis rises like a frozen concrete wave, defined by its white, sweeping balconies that curve upward toward a soaring skylight. Architect John Portman designed this fifty-story hotel to house an internal atrium that spans the full height of the building. In nineteen eighty-five, the lobby floor was poured to resemble a giant, pulsating heart. Guests often find themselves disoriented by the sheer scale of the space, which remains one of the largest enclosed hotel atriums in the world.
