Oak Hill

The house at Oak Hill sits behind a heavy iron gate, its white columns rising tall against the trees. This Greek Revival structure began as the home of Thomas Felton, but its reputation rests with his daughter, Martha Berry. She grew up watching the local mountain children struggle with a lack of formal schooling. In nineteen oh two, she gathered three boys in a small cabin on the property and began teaching them to read, a simple start that grew into the Berry Schools.
