Payne‑Strachan House (also known as “Jefferson Davis House”)

The Payne-Strachan House stands out for its high-shouldered, cream-colored exterior and the distinctive, delicate ironwork tracing the wide double galleries. Built in eighteen forty-nine, this Greek Revival residence served as a temporary home for Jefferson Davis during the final months of his life. After the Civil War, the former Confederate president sought refuge here with his friend, Judge Charles Fenner. Davis spent his days drafting his memoirs in a second-floor room, where he eventually died in eighteen eighty-nine.
