At least eighteen documented duels occurred on this rocky shelf between seventeen hundred and eighteen eighty-four. The site gained its most lasting fame on the morning of July eleventh, eighteen hundred and four, when the sitting United States Vice President Aaron Burr and the former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton met here to settle a bitter, long-standing political feud with pistols. Hamilton was struck in the abdomen during the encounter and died the following day in New York City, a tragedy that permanently altered the trajectory of early American politics.
