Christodora House

Christodora House stands as a sixteen-story monument to a unique era of urban reform. Built in nineteen twenty-eight, it functioned as a skyscraper settlement house, providing immigrant and low-income families with access to a swimming pool, gymnasium, theater, and medical clinics. The building was designed to offer modern, fireproof facilities in the heart of a crowded tenement district, and it even served as the site for composer George Gershwin’s first public recital.
