Francisco “Pancho” Ramos Community

The Francisco Pancho Ramos Community Garden stands as a living example of local resilience. In 1979, residents of the Lower East Side looked at an abandoned, debris-filled lot at the corner of Ninth Street and Avenue C and began clearing the rubble by hand. They planted seeds along the chain link fence, transforming a neglected space into a thriving half-acre of vegetable plots and flowerbeds. This effort was part of a larger neighborhood movement in the late twentieth century to reclaim vacant property from the cycles of arson and decay that defined the era. Today, the garden remains a dedicated green space where meandering paths lead visitors past a koi and turtle pond and an arbor of fig trees.
