Hurricane Maria Memorial

monument

The Hurricane Maria Memorial stands at the Chambers Street Overlook in Battery Park City as a tribute to those lost during the 2017 storm. It takes the form of an ascending glass spiral that evokes both the swirling shape of a hurricane and the protective curve of a shell. The structure reaches nearly fifteen and a half feet at its highest point, and its orientation is carefully aligned with the Chambers Street axis to catch the sun. When light passes through the iridescent glass panels, it projects vibrant beams of red, orange, and blue onto the surrounding pavement.
