Pavillion (by Demetri Porphyrios)

The Pavilion in Rockefeller Park stands as a deliberate piece of architectural philosophy meant to bridge the gap between the natural landscape and the surrounding cityscape. Designed by Demetri Porphyrios and completed in nineteen ninety-two, it sits on an upraised granite platform that separates the quiet greensward from the towering apartment buildings nearby. The structure has no walls, which allows you to look through its frame to see both the lush lawn and the dense urban environment simultaneously. This open design functions as a calm waystation that intentionally contrasts with the architectural complexity found throughout the rest of Battery Park City.
