Sculpture Park

Battery Park City exists on land that was not here until the late twentieth century. To build this neighborhood, engineers created a massive landfill using soil excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center and dredged sand from the harbor. Before any of the current high-rise buildings stood here, this stretch of reclaimed shoreline became a temporary frontier for artists. In the early nineteen eighties, they used the raw, vacant terrain as a sprawling outdoor studio for experimental projects and surreal installations, setting a precedent for the public art that defines the area today.
