Wallabout Bay

The name Wallabout comes from the Dutch phrase Waal bogt, or Walloons Bay. It was named for the Walloons, a French-speaking group from present-day Belgium who arrived in the sixteen thirties as some of the first European settlers in this area. They were drawn to these fertile, tidal marshlands, setting up farms along what was then a gentle, curved inlet of the East River.
