Northern Spur Preserve - High Line

The Northern Spur Preserve represents the original state of the High Line before it became a landscaped park. When freight trains stopped running on this elevated rail line in the nineteen eighties, the tracks were left to the elements. Nature slowly reclaimed the abandoned industrial structure, as wind-blown seeds took root in the thin layer of soil and gravel between the steel tracks. Landscape designers chose to preserve this specific section in its wild state to honor the spontaneous ecology that emerged during decades of disuse. While the rest of the park features carefully curated gardens with thousands of planted species, the Northern Spur remains a living exhibit of those early, self-seeded survivors. You cannot walk directly into this protected area, but you can view it from the observation deck constructed just above it. This design allows the wild landscape to thrive undisturbed, continuing the natural cycle of growth and succession that first defined the structure when it was forgotten by the city.
