Confucius Plaza

Confucius Plaza is a forty-four-story residential complex that serves as a defining landmark of Chinatown. Completed in nineteen seventy-six, it stands four hundred thirty-three feet tall as a curving brown brick tower that mirrors the massive arch of the nearby Manhattan Bridge. The building was the first major, publicly subsidized housing development in New York City designed specifically for the Chinese American community. Before its construction, many local residents lived in cramped, substandard tenements that lacked modern amenities. By integrating residential apartments with a public school, a daycare center, and community facilities, the project aimed to provide a stable, dignified environment for families and seniors alike.
