Triumph of the Human Spirit

The sculptor Lorenzo Pace created the Triumph of the Human Spirit as a monument to the endurance of the African diaspora. He drew direct inspiration from his own family history, specifically the story of his great-grandfather, Steve Pace, who was brought from Africa to the United States on a slave ship in the mid nineteenth century. Embedded within the base of this towering twelve foot bronze sculpture is a wooden box containing ancestral remains and artifacts. This inclusion serves as a permanent, physical connection to the millions of people who survived the Middle Passage.
