55 Wall Street

historic

The building before you at 55 Wall Street carries a history written in heavy granite and carved stone. Its foundation rests on the site of the Merchants Exchange, which rose from the ashes of the Great Fire of 1835. The architect Isaiah Rogers designed the original structure in the Greek Revival style, creating a massive temple to commerce that utilized twelve monolithic columns of Quincy granite. Each of these colossal pillars was delivered to the site by sea and hauled along Wall Street by teams of oxen.
