Battery Maritime Building

The Battery Maritime Building stands at the edge of the water as a rare surviving example of Beaux-Arts Structural Expressionism. Completed in 1909, it represents a moment when New York City turned to ornate, grand architecture for its public infrastructure. Its design features exposed steel trusses, rivets, and decorative metalwork that recall the aesthetic of nineteenth-century world fair halls. It remains the only ferry terminal in Manhattan that retains this distinctive, historic style.
