Pier 17 stands on ground that defines the very origin of New York City as a global maritime hub. Long before its modern glass facade, this stretch of the East River was the epicenter of the Fulton Fish Market, a chaotic and vital marketplace that operated here for over 180 years. Starting in 1822, midnight arrivals of fishing schooners kept this waterfront awake while the rest of the city slept, creating a rugged commercial district that eventually earned New York its reputation as the city that never sleeps.
