ANTA Washington Square Theatre

The ANTA Washington Square Theatre was a striking departure from traditional architecture. To the casual observer in the 1960s, it resembled a simple, mustard-yellow steel box, more like a warehouse than a professional stage. It was intentionally constructed as a temporary facility to house the Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center while their permanent home was still under construction. The building lacked any exterior decoration or ornate marquee, standing out in the neighborhood as an utilitarian, functional structure built for speed and necessity rather than elegance.
