On the early morning of March 27, 2020, this station became the site of a tragic act of arson. A northbound number two train pulled into the platform while engulfed in flames, forcing a desperate emergency evacuation for the passengers on board. The fire, which investigators linked to a series of smaller, suspicious blazes at nearby stations that same morning, caused significant damage to both the subway cars and the station infrastructure. In the midst of the smoke and chaos, 36-year-old train operator Garrett Goble lost his life while successfully ensuring that the commuters were moved to safety. He was later honored for his bravery in acting to protect others before himself during the crisis.
