High Line View Point

Before this elevated park existed, massive freight trains traveled directly down the center of Tenth Avenue. The steam engines were so dangerous to pedestrians that the city employed men on horseback, known as West Side Cowboys, to ride in front of the trains waving red flags to prevent collisions. This spot now sits on the steel tracks that were built decades later specifically to remove those trains from the street level and eliminate the constant risk of injury.
