Empire Theatre (42nd Street)

The Empire Theatre stands out as a feat of engineering that defines the modern streetscape of 42nd Street. In 1998, workers lifted the entire 3,700-ton structure from its original foundations and rolled it 168 feet to the west along a specially constructed track. This massive operation preserved the historic Beaux-Arts facade and auditorium, which now serve as the dramatic entryway and lobby for a sprawling 25-screen cinema complex. It remains the largest structural move ever completed in New York City.
