The land beneath your feet exists today only because an ambitious, massive highway project was cancelled. In the mid-twentieth century, city planners intended to carve the Mid-Manhattan Expressway through this neighborhood, and they cleared this corner to make way for the highway's support pillars. When those plans were abandoned, the space was reclaimed for the community rather than remaining a vacant construction scar.
