United States lightship Ambrose (LV-87)

The lightship Ambrose, officially known as LV-87, acted as a floating lighthouse that marked the entrance to the busiest shipping channel in the United States. For twenty-four years, this riveted steel vessel anchored at the mouth of the Lower New York Bay, guiding ships through shifting sands and heavy fog. She served as the very first welcoming sight for over six million immigrants as they began their final approach to New York Harbor.
