Blackwell House

Blackwell House is the oldest building on Roosevelt Island. It was constructed between seventeen ninety six and eighteen hundred and four by James Blackwell. At that time, this land was a private family estate used for farming and quarrying, long before the island was purchased by the city and filled with institutions. This house serves as the only remaining structure from the era of private ownership on the island.
