The Oliver Gould Jennings House stands at 7 East 72nd Street as a refined example of Beaux-Arts architecture from the height of the Gilded Age. Built in 1899, it was commissioned by Oliver Gould Jennings, a financier and heir to a fortune derived from the Standard Oil Company. The mansion was designed by architects Ernest Flagg and Walter B. Chambers, who received specific instructions to ensure the building complemented its neighbor to the east, the Henry T. Sloane residence. By carefully aligning floor heights and using similar Indiana limestone, the architects created a unified, Parisian-inspired streetscape that still defines this block today.
