28th Street station (IRT Lexington Avenue Line)

The 28th Street station on the Lexington Avenue line holds a place in history as one of the original twenty-eight stations that launched the entire New York City subway system in October 1904. When the station first opened, commuters did not walk through turnstiles to reach the trains. Instead, passengers entered through specific gate areas where employees stood ready to collect paper tickets by hand. The system also functioned with separate stairways for entering and exiting, allowing for a flow of movement that kept incoming and outgoing crowds apart.
