You are walking toward a site that was once known as the White Fort. Built in 1812 to defend New York Harbor against a potential British invasion, the installation stood on land that was partially submerged in the Hudson River. Its walls were finished with a bright whitewash, a measure intended to make the structure easier to spot for signaling while helping it blend into the glare of the water.
