The Ethel Barrymore Theatre stands as a rare survivor among Broadway venues. It is the only theater built by the Shubert Organization specifically to honor a performer that still remains in operation today. The brothers commissioned the building in 1928 as a strategic maneuver, offering to name it after the legendary actress Ethel Barrymore if she agreed to star in its opening production, The Kingdom of God. This deal secured her talent for the premiere and cemented her legacy in the heart of the theater district.
