The Longacre Theatre was built by the colorful producer Harry Frazee, a man who divided his time between the glitz of Broadway and the intense world of professional baseball. Frazee famously owned the Boston Red Sox, and it was to fund his theatrical ambitions that he sold the contract of the legendary Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. This transaction became one of the most infamous moments in sports history, and local theater lore suggests the resulting business difficulties followed him to this very building. Many superstitious producers and performers believe a curse lingers here, often fearing that any show opening at the Longacre is destined to fail.
