Lyceum Theatre

The Lyceum Theatre holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating legitimate theater on Broadway. When it opened in 1903, the producer Daniel Frohman constructed a private apartment for himself directly above the stage. He installed a small, inconspicuous door that provided him with a bird's eye view of the performances below. Folklore suggests that when his wife, the actress Margaret Illington, performed on his stage, he would occasionally wave a white handkerchief out of that secret door to signal to her that she was overacting.
