A&P Warehouse

The building you are approaching at 67 Vestry Street stands as a fortress-like relic of a time when the neighborhood served as the commercial backbone of the city. Completed in 1897, it was designed specifically for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, commonly known as A and P, which had transformed the American grocery industry by eliminating middlemen to offer lower prices. Architect Frederick P. Dinkelberg gave the warehouse its distinctive Romanesque Revival facade, utilizing heavy masonry to store the massive shipments of coffee, tea, and dry goods that fueled the company’s early nationwide expansion.
