Former American Express Stables

The American Express Stables stand as a reminder of an era when the company relied on horsepower to move packages across New York City. Built in eighteen sixty-six, the original structure served as a hub for the horses and heavy drays that physically carried freight throughout the growing metropolis. Today, if you look high up on the brick facade, you can still see a terra cotta bas-relief featuring the company's nineteenth-century symbol, a watchful bulldog holding a key. This emblem was designed to represent the company's commitment to the security and protection of customer shipments.
