Capture of Turtle Bay Depot

On the night of July 20, 1775, this site was the stage for a bold act of rebellion. A group of Sons of Liberty, led by figures like Marinus Willett and John Lamb, carried out a strategic raid on the British storehouse that stood here at the edge of the East River. They successfully overpowered the guards and seized a significant cache of military supplies and weaponry. These captured stores were quickly transported to support Patriot forces in Boston and at Fort Ticonderoga. This decisive action proved to be a critical moment in the early American Revolutionary War, effectively fueling the local Patriot cause at a time when the city was still deeply divided between rebels and those loyal to the Crown.
