Rockefeller Guest House

The Rockefeller Guest House at two hundred forty-two East Fifty-Second Street stands as an architectural rarity in Manhattan. Commissioned in nineteen forty-eight by the philanthropist Blanchette Rockefeller, this building served as a private gallery for her extensive collection of modern art. Her husband did not share her passion for modernism, so she created this space as a dedicated home for the works she loved. Because of this, the house functioned as an informal, intimate extension of the Museum of Modern Art, where she served as a long-time patron and twice as president. It provided a secluded venue for her to host museum donors, artists, and dealers away from the public eye.
