Single Form

monument

The massive bronze sculpture you are approaching is titled Single Form and it stands twenty-one feet tall as a memorial to Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary General of the United Nations. Created by British artist Barbara Hepworth, the work holds the distinction of being her largest public commission. It occupies a prominent place in the United Nations Plaza, situated right at the edge of a circular reflecting pool. The sculpture was installed in 1964, three years after Hammarskjold died in a tragic plane crash while on a peace mission in Africa.
