Pier I

Pier I serves as a unique anchor for Riverside Park South on the Upper West Side. While most piers in the city reach out into the water at a perfect ninety degree angle to the shoreline, this one is angled at fifty five degrees. This specific geometry was an industrial necessity rather than an aesthetic choice. It allowed workers to transfer rail cars directly from the tracks of the old Penn Central railyard onto waiting barges that would carry freight across the river.
