David H. Koch Theater

The David H. Koch Theater began its life in 1964 as the New York State Theater, built as a centerpiece of the state's contribution to the New York World's Fair. Architect Philip Johnson designed the building to anchor the south side of the Lincoln Center plaza. When asked about his choice of Italian travertine for the exterior facade, Johnson famously quipped that if the stone was good enough for Saint Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, it was certainly good enough for his theater.
