The Rodin Museum features an arched entrance gate modeled after the seventeenth century Chateau d’Issy. Inside the manicured gardens, the bronze cast of The Thinker greets visitors from a pedestal, overseeing a collection that Jules Mastbaum spent years assembling. Mastbaum, a Philadelphia theater magnate, tracked down these bronzes and marbles across Europe with the goal of gifting them to his hometown. He died in nineteen twenty-six, just months before the museum opened, never seeing his collection housed in this limestone building.
