Dilworth Park

Dilworth Park features a grid of programmed water jets that rise directly from the granite paving in front of Philadelphia City Hall. Before the nineteen fifties, this space functioned as a sunken, walled-off transit entrance that locals often called the dungeon. When the city redesigned the area, they removed the heavy concrete barriers and raised the ground level to meet the street. A woman named Dilworth once fought to keep the plaza open to the public, and it now bears her name.
