Independence Hall

The red brick facade of Independence Hall features a wooden steeple that reaches high above Chestnut Street. This is where the Pennsylvania State House served as the meeting place for the Second Continental Congress. Inside the Assembly Room, delegates debated and signed both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. In seventeen eighty-seven, George Washington sat in a chair carved with a sunburst design, watching the final signatures go down while James Madison wondered if the sun was rising or setting.
