JFK Plaza (Love Park)

The massive red steel letters spelling out the word LOVE sit squarely in the middle of JFK Plaza. This sunken urban space was designed by Edmund Bacon in nineteen sixty-five as a grand front door to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. While Robert Indiana’s sculpture is the plaza’s most famous resident, the site became a global destination for skateboarders in the eighties. They treated the granite ledges and steps as a playground, turning a formal civic space into a raw, concrete battleground.
