The Lit Brothers building occupies a full city block with a facade of white marble and cast iron that stretches along Market Street. It started as a humble clothing shop in eighteen ninety-one, founded by two brothers who expanded their store by buying up the neighboring buildings one by one. Eventually, the department store grew to house its own power plant, a restaurant, and even a rooftop playground for children while their parents shopped for the latest fashions in downtown Philadelphia.
