Saint Peter's Way

Saint Peter’s Way is a narrow, brick-paved pedestrian passage cutting between the back gardens of eighteenth-century houses in Society Hill. It marks the original boundary of the Saint Peter’s Church burial ground. In seventeen sixty-one, the church vestry decided to sell off a strip of this land to raise money for the building of the steeple. When the surveyor measured the plot, he inadvertently created this secluded shortcut, which remains a quiet, shaded corridor tucked away from the city traffic.
