The original Di Bruno Brothers shop occupies a sliver of a storefront on South Ninth Street, distinguished by the hundreds of hanging salamis and wheels of aged provolone crowding the front window. Danny and Joe Di Bruno opened this spot in nineteen thirty-nine, stocking the small shelves with imported Italian goods that were hard to find elsewhere in the city. The brothers spent their days slicing prosciutto by hand, often giving neighborhood children small samples of cheese while their parents shopped.
