The Barclay rises eighteen stories over Rittenhouse Square with a facade of dark, textured brick and limestone trimming. When it opened in nineteen twenty-nine, developers marketed it as a residential hotel for the city’s elite, offering maid service and a private dining room to tenants who maintained permanent suites. Inside, the original lobby floors remain paved in imported marble. By the nineteen sixties, owners converted the individual units into private condominiums, changing the building from a temporary luxury address into a permanent residence.
