Sarcone's Bakery

The red, white, and green brick facade of Sarcone’s Bakery on South Ninth Street stands out for its painted sign that has advertised fresh bread since nineteen eighteen. Inside, the ovens are original to the building. The Sarcone family started baking here when the neighborhood was filled with Italian immigrants, and five generations later, they still use the same long-fermentation process. Workers pull trays of seeded loaves from the deep, narrow hearths by hand every morning before the sun comes up.
