Ghent Market Hall

The Ghent Market Hall is a massive, double-gabled structure of concrete and wood that looms over the city center. Its most striking feature is the thousands of small glass apertures embedded in the roof, which flood the open space below with light. When architects Robbrecht and Daem finished the building in twenty twelve, they sparked a citywide argument that lasted for years. Half the residents praised the modern design, while the other half claimed it blocked the medieval view of Saint Nicholas Church.
