Saint Bavo's Abbey

Saint Bavo’s Abbey is defined by the stark, jagged red brick ruins that rise above the surrounding parkland. Founded in the seventh century by Saint Amand, this was once the wealthiest religious site in the region. In fifteen forty, Emperor Charles the Fifth ordered the complex dismantled to make way for a defensive fortress, leaving behind only the chapter house and the refectory walls. Today, those remnants stand as a heavy, silent frame for the medieval history that was deliberately swept away.
