Patershol

The Patershol neighborhood centers on a narrow, tangled grid of cobblestone alleys tucked behind the Gravensteen castle. These streets belong to the oldest part of Ghent, originally housing leather tanners and later the monks of the Carmelite monastery. In the nineteen seventies, the area sat nearly abandoned and slated for demolition to make way for modern offices. Instead, a wave of restaurateurs and residents moved in, turning the former workshops into a dense cluster of eateries behind heavy, wooden medieval doors.
