Korenlei

The Korenlei is defined by a sharp, jagged rhythm of stepped gables rising directly from the water. This quay served as the primary grain harbor for medieval Ghent, where ships unloaded their cargo under the watchful eyes of the guilds. Merchants built these narrow, tall houses to cram as much storage as possible onto the expensive waterfront. In thirteen eighty-five, the grain weighers' guild famously clashed with city officials here, ending with the laborers seizing control of the scales for three full days.
