Rabot

The Rabot is a pair of fifteen century brick towers with a jagged, stepped gable rising between them like a stone crown. These towers once acted as a fortified gatehouse, regulating water traffic and blocking enemies from entering the city along the Lieve Canal. During the Siege of Ghent in fourteen eighty-eight, the city militia held this spot against the forces of Maximilian of Austria, preventing his army from breaching the walls. Today, the canal is gone, leaving the structure isolated on a busy intersection.
